Dutch king former sarcoidosis patient

King William Alexander may be one of the highest placed celebrities who suffered from sarcoidosis

Willem Alexander (born 1967) ascended the Dutch throne in April 2013 after his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated. In the 1990s, when he was in his mid twenties, the disease was discovered in his lungs during a routine medical check-up. It disappeared without treatment, the Dutch government information service confirmed in an official statement after rumours about the prince’s health erupted in 1999.

Last year, when Willem Alexander, still crown prince, opened the Sarcoidosis Center at Rotterdam’s university hospital, I was introducted to him. We both contracted the disease around the same time so we had a lively exchange of shared experiences. He remembers this period of his life very well and clearly feels a bond with current patients.

Below is an article from the June 2013 issue of the Dutch sarcoidosis association’s magazine congratulating Willem Alexander upon his ascension of the throne.
